How Many Glass of Water Should You Drink?

Recently there has been a lot of discussion about whether you need to drink 8 glasses of water a day as recommended by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council. I always felt this was a ridiculous requirement, since it did not make common sense. Of course, you need water daily to cleanse your body and to replace the lymph liquid and the liquid in your cells and tissue, but 8 glasses? Gosh, I can barely drink 4 glasses. This practice has been challenged by many health experts, now and in the past.

Eight glasses a day they said was needed to remove toxins from the body, to keep your skin looking youthful, and to maintain good health.
In the 2002 issue of American Journal of Physiology, Dr. Valtin M.D, of Dartmouth College said, “I have found no scientific reports concluding that we all must drink at least eight glasses of water a day. On the contrary, there are publications that state the opposite.”
The truth is you need water every day, since you lose it through urine and sweat and this has to be replaced. Your body knows when it needs water by making you thirsty. You can also tell by your urine. It should be a very light-yellow. If it is deep and dark yellow then you are probably not drinking enough water. Of course, if you are taking B-vitamins your urine will be a deep yellow.

Extra exercise or work calls for more water than normal. Also, as you age, you need to drink more water, since your thirst signal does not work as good. And, your body needs water to lubricate your joints, keep your skin hydrated, remove toxins from your body, aid in your circulation, and digestion, elimination and nutrient absorption.

Get your water from spring water or reversed osmosis. Use distilled water only on occasion. Distilled water has the wrong ionization, pH, oxidation potential, or polarization thus making it not suitable for frequent drinking, since it may pull minerals out of the body.

Avoid using bottle water, if possible, since bottles when processed have residues from the manufacturing process – antimony, fluoride, arsenic, and carcinogenic compounds. Using glass and Nalgene bottles is the best choice for bottled water.
Eat more fruits and vegetables and you will not have to drink eight glasses of water or even six. They contain 70 to 90 % water. When in season eat daily watermelon and melon to boost your water intake and at the same time get those special nutrients that they have. Also make sure you have salad with each main meal. Eat cucumbers they have 98% water. All the leafy lettuce has plenty of water.

Just use common sense as to how much water to drink. Listen to your body, it will tell you how much water to drink. If you eat fruits and vegetables, you will find that you feel like drinking less water. But be smart and use glass bottle or look for Nalgene bottles to put your reverse osmosis water. Don’t let the experts from the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council tell how much water you should drink for good health. This is something you should feel.
