Do You Need a Natural Sleeping Pill like Melatonin?

If you don’t sleep well, then you need to take a natural sleeping pill. Melatonin is one of the least expensive ways to take care of this problem. The nice thing about melatonin supplements is that it is not only good for producing sound sleep it also provides your body with the melatonin it needs.

Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, called the master gland, near the center of your brain. The pineal gland controls your glandular system, immune system,

reproductive system, sleep patterns, and aging process. The pineal gland does all of this through the hormone melatonin.

So you see, melatonin is not only good as a sleeping pill but is needed for so many other functions in your body.

How the pineal gland releases melatonin

Because the pineal gland is connected to your eyes, it is sometimes called your third eye. When you first wake up and open your eyes light strikes the pineal gland and the production of melatonin is shut off. As darkness falls, the pineal gland starts releasing melatonin to prepare you for sleep.

When you don’t get enough sleep, a good eight hours, or you work swing or grave shift, or you travel to a different time zone, your natural sleep cycle is interrupted. Because the pineal gland controls your glandular and immune system, it gets mixed up and sends incorrect signals to these areas. This is why people become ill or diseased when they don’t get the proper sleep time.

After the ages of 40-50, your production of melatonin starts to decrease. And eventually the pineal gland hardens and withers and no melatonin is produced. When this happens, you are prone to many serious and deadly diseases.

When you lack melatonin

In experiments with mice, researchers keep them in artificial light 24 hours a day. This caused the pineal gland to release very little melatonin. These mice looked tired and old and died before their time. By the fourth generation, the mice did not reproduce and died prematurely.

These experiment show the importants of taking melatonin supplements. As you age, your pineal gland shrinks and outputs less melatonin. This affects the function of your glands, and immune system. The result is your life is shortened by its inability to fight off disease.
The use of melatonin has shown to boost your immune system by rejuvenating your thymus gland, which is your master immune gland. It also withers and shrinks as you age.

Here are some additional benefits of using melatonin:

It stimulates your pineal gland to release more melatonin.
It helps get you to sleep and keeps you asleep longer than without using it
Helps normalize cholesterol and blood pressure
Restores the immune system
Helps to reduce spreading of breast and prostate cancers

A powerful antioxidant for your cells and brain

In addition to these benefits, melatonin is also one of the best antioxidants. It will neutralize the worst free radicals that invade your body. Melatonin goes into cell walls and surrounds DNA to protect them from free radicals. In the brain it zaps free radicals and keeps your memory thinking straight for a long time.

How to use melatonin

So how much melatonin should you take? Because melatonin is a hormone, it can upset your hormonal balance if you take to much. In some clients, they have complained about headaches when they take it. If you are taking drugs, melatonin can interfere with their activity, so check with your doctor before taking it.

But in general, 1–3 mg is a good enough dose. If you are over 60, then maybe up to 5 mg is enough. You can experiment to determine how much is good for you. I have found that 5 mg is what I need. I have been taking melatonin for over 10 years. I usually take 2 sublingual 2.5 mg tablets as I get into bed. I sleep right through from 10 pm to 6 am. Before, when I didn’t take it, I was waking up around 2 am. If I take to much melatonin, I wake up groggy.
